West Indies romp in

NZPA-AAP Georgetown, Guyana An unbeaten 133 from the opener, Desmond Haynes, helped the West Indies to beat Australia by eight wickets at Berbice, yesterday, in the first of four oneday cricket internationals. Australia scored 231 for five in its allocated 50 overs and the West Indies romped to 233 for two in reply with two overs to spare. The West Indies got off to

a good start and always had the target within their reach. Haynes’s superb 133 was backed up by a fine 61 from Richie Richardson. Haynes shared in an opening stand of 63 with Gordon Greenidge, who made 23. Richardson and Haynes then put on 166 in a match-winning second wicket stand before Richardson was caught by Dean Jones off the bowling of Terry Aiderman. ■

The pair took advantage of an easy-paced pitch and emerged from a slow start to put on 106 after the captain, Kim Hughes, had won the toss. Smith went on to make 60, while Wessels contributed 44. Hughes and the vice-captain, Allan Border, were both bowled for two by Larry Gomes. Gomes ended with figures of three for 34.
