Inflation and money supply
Sir, — Congratulations to Mr Lange on having the political courage to admit publicly the real cause of most inflation. In his address to the Hamilton Rotary Club, he referred to the inflationary consequences of money supply growth. He should now simply state that excess money supply growth amounts to the Government printing money and is an underhand and unauthorised form of taxation through the inflation it produces. Jim Anderton, at a Labour Party meeting in Aranui last year, said he believed that a Labour Government should use money supply growth to finance “good causes.” I am drawn to the conclusion that Labour intends to continue deliberately to generate inflation in just the same way as the present Government. The public must protect itself from such government irresponsibility by placing constitutional limits'oh the size, of the Budget deficit and the amount of money the Governriient can print. — Yours, etc., COLIN H. ALDRIDGE. February 28, 1984.
