Prisoners given free surgery
NZPA-Reuter Sacramento, California
California prison inmates have been receiving free cosmetic surgery, including operations to reshape their noses and remove the bags under their eyes, a state senator complained. At least one female inmate had so-called “tummy tuck” surgery to enhance her figure, said Senator Dan Boatwright. In addition, female prisoners had received free tobacco, baseball uniforms, and even pantyhose. He said that surgeons had volunteered to do the cosmetic surgery to gain experience, but he claimed that taxpayers were bearing the burden of other costs involved' in the operations, such as for anesthetics and medical dressings. Senator Boatwright has introduced bills to prevent the use of state funds for such purposes.
