Other carp escaped?
PA Hamilton A Chinese grass carp, caught in the Waikato River by fishermen recently, was not the first thought to have escaped from a drain-clear-ing experimental area.
An Auckland Acclimatisation Society field officer, Mr Peter Howard, said at the week-end that a dragline had dredged one out of a drain downstream of the screened-off trial area a
few weeks ago. He said he had taken the latest carp from fishermen in the lower reaches of the Waikato River. The carp probably came from drains in the AkaakaOtaua drainage district, west of Pukekohe, said Mr Howard. Since the discovery, “an anomaly” in the screen system which is meant to prevent the carp from escaping
from the drains, had been found and the escape route had been plugged, he said.
Mr Howard said the next step was to make a count of the carp still in the drains. This would take about three weeks.
The carp have been released into farm drains in the Akaaka-Otaua area which is mostly reclaimed swamp, as an experiment in aquatic weed control.
