Cows hit by V.D. epidemic
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney Victoria’s dairy herd is being threatened by a virulent form of veneral disease that makes cows infertile and causes abortions, and veterinarians are worried about a possible epidemic. According to reports from Melbourne, the disease has almost bankrupted several South Gippsland farmers. The bacteria, which is spread mainly by bulls, has been found in several other parts of the state and also in Tasmania.
Dr Len Stephens, senior veterinary pathologist in the State’s Agriculture Department, said the organism had been in dairy cattle for some years. Experts were baffled as to why it had not become a major problem.
