Mussel men back

Mussel workers at Marine Foods’ processing plant at Havelock have returned to work after a five-day strike over pay rates. They went on strike on February 20 because management was giving them a piece rate of 25c a half-shell and 36c a shell for opening mussels. They claimed that the award provided a mini-

mum of 36c a shell and did not specify any lesser rate for half-shells. The assistant secretary of the Food Processor’s Union, Mr Alex Pattison, said that the parties had agreed to what he said was an “interim arrangement” until the award could be sorted out. He declined to say what the arrangement was.
