Cracked piston

The first engineer of the Rio Amazonas, Mr Arndt Strandene, shows a crack in the ship’s piston, in the engineroom at Lyttelton yesterday. The Rio Amazonas, a general cargo vessel, made an unexpected return to the port yesterday, after developing engine trouble off the Canterbury coast soon after sailing on Friday.

The vessel sailed on Friday afternoon for Gaiaguil, Ecuador, but returned to anchor off Lyttelton after a

crack was discovered in one of her seven pistons. The piston was repaired and refitted by the ship’s crew but again cracked during a trial on Sunday. The vessel was towed into port early yesterday morn-

ing. A Lyttelton engineering firm, Sinclair, Melbourne, Ltd, is expected to assist with repairs. A spokesman for the vessel’s agents said the repair was minor and the ship was expected to leave port in several days. The 6625-ton Rio Amazonas is owned by the Ecua-dorean-based company, Noboa, and is a regular caller at Lyttelton. The vessel had been in port to unload 18,000 cartons of Ecuadorean bananas. ’
