Extremes of fortoiae for apprentice
The Riccarton apprentice, Sharon Reid, could hardly have experienced a more frustrating day on Saturday, not only failing to weigh in throughout the day, but taking a tumble from Lady
Beebee and suffering the embarrassment of her mount, Fairway Lass, refusing to leave the starting stalls in the T.D.L. Westport Handicap. Much to Reid’s relief, proceedings on the second day of the meeting yesterday, were in complete contrast. She picked up the mount on the outsider, Star Piece, to win the Karamea Maiden at odds of 34-to-one, and forty minutes later partnered Fairway Lass, which was on her best behaviour yesterday, to a comfortable win in the Island Port Handicap. Trained by Reid’s employer, Michael Pitman, Fairway Lass, the second favourite, settled in second last position in the eighthorse field, but had galloped to the front before the home turn.
She was untroubled to beat Our Hope and the dominating favourite, Blyme, which loomed as a major threat on the turn but was unable to produce anything extra in the run home. A splendid run in maiden
events was enjoyed by the Harris training establishment, of Tuahiwi. The Harris partnership, which now consists of Ray, Barbara and their eldest son, Mark, produced Fijian Dancer and Star Piece, to clear novice ranks in the first two events on yesterday’s programme, both starting at lucrative odds. Later in the day, the former North Islander, Lanson, gained compensation for a desperately unlucky third on Saturday when also successful. Mark Harris was credited with his first training win in partnership with his parents when another stable runner, Regal Pine, was a winner on the first day. Bo Diddley gave Gary Biair his fifth win at the meeting when he followed up his first-day win with an equally impressive victory in the Martin and Co Handicap.
The win, achieved with the minimum of effort suggested that the Richmondtrained gelding would not be disgraced in more distinguished company.
