Political polls
Sir,—From London, our Prime Minister says he is happy with the latest Heylen political poll and that National is the only party that can derive satisfaction from the Heylen findings. Sir Robert Muldoon is correct in his summation, but it is a sad commentary on our political apathy that the party he leads can still command huge public support despite its appalling record in administering New Zealand. Record budget deficits, record borrowings, record bankruptcies, record unemployment and now record bungling by incompetent Cabinet Ministers, and still the Muldoon image rides high in the popularity stakes. This strange state of affairs could be due, in part, to editorial bias in the news media, notwithstanding that it is obvious to the discerning man-in-the-street that there is far greater talent and drive available in the ranks of Labour back-benchers than in the entire National Cabinet.—Yours, etc.,
R. L. PLUCK. February 23, 1984.
