Foreign shipping tallied

More vessels called at New Zealand ports from overseas destinations during 1983 compared with the previous year, according to provisional figures released by the Statistics Department. For the year from January to December, 2978 vessels called, with a combined net tonnage of 12.9 million. Although fewer overseas vessels called in 1982, with 2855 visits registered, the net tonnage was slightly higher at 13.1 million. The Port of Lyttelton recorded the highest figures for South Island port arrivals with 326 arrivals comprising nearly one million tons. The average size of vessel was 3001 tons. However, the Port of Otago recorded the highest tonnage for overseas departures from South Island ports, with 164 vessels of 1.1 million net tons. The department said Otago’s figures were due to a greater number of large container vessels using Otago as their final port of loading. Lyttelton recorded 289 overseas departures with a combined tonnage of 972,000. Wellington recorded the highest number of arrivals, 711, which represented 24 per cent of the total for New Zealand. Tonnage entering Wellington, however, was only 11 per cent of total tonnage. Because the port is host to a large number of foreign fishing vessels, the average size of overseas arrivals was only 2030 net tons. Auckland received 598 ships from overseas with total weight at 4.8 million tons, 37 per cent of the total tonnage. This was reflected in the port’s average size of vessel, which was 8073 tons. Other port traffic of interest includes Whangarei, with the average size of vessel weighing 15,252 tons, which reflects the larger size of vessels serving the oil refinery at Marsden Point. The average size of ships departing from Taharoa and Waverley, the ports from which iron sands are exported, were greater still, at 33,267 tons and 46,278 tons respectively.
