Speedboat crash ends challenge

By

Frank Duggan

It was a black week-end for the successful Auckland speedboat driver, Graeme Carberry, at the AC Delco regatta on the Estuary. On Saturday, he blew the motor of his Boss Speidel, one of the favourites for the national event. He worked throughout the night to replace it with an innovative and expensive motor, and then yesterday afternoon crashed at 175 km/h. Boss Speidel’s loop-the-loop came in the closing stages of the AC Delco when lying in second place. For no apparent reason — “I don’t know what happened,” a dazed and shaken Carberry said 30 minutes after the crash — Boss Speidel launched itself into the air just before the end of the back-straight on the last leg.

As it reached the maximum of its cartwheel, Carberry was thrown out, only to be bit by the stern as it was diving nose first into the water. The impact tossed Carberry about 20 metres, and rescue boats hurriedly picked him up and rushed him to the jetty. . Carberry was taken by stretcher to a waiting ambulance, but recovered sufficiently after 15 minutes to be able to stand and talk to officials. Results:
