Golf to Sanders

PA Oamaru John Sanders, the Canterbury Freyberg golfer, achieved an individual career milestone when he won the South Island golf championships by four strokes at Oamaru yesterday. Sanders has been a member of two winning Freyberg teams — Otago in 1978 and Canterbury in 1983. He was also a member of the Canterbury team which won the Southland invitational tournament last year and paired with Otago’s Kim McDonald to win the 1979 New Zealand foursomes title. Yesterday Sanders, aged 31, established himself as an individual golfer with rounds of 71, 73, 73, 70 which put him four strokes ahead of the defending champion, Terry Cochrane (Waitemata). Cochrane started the last round three strokes ahead of Stephen Morshuis (Taieri) and f&e strokes ahead of

Sanders; but in a dismal putting display he blew his lead after the first nine holes of the final round. Sanders seized his opportunity and clinched the title with birdies on the fifteenth and sixteenth holes.

Cochrane led from the outset when he carded five birdies in the first round to finish three under par on 69. His accurate approaching paved the way for success and three of these birdies came from putts of less than a metre.

Paul Minifie (Christchurch) scored five birdies and Jamie Kupa (Napier) made four birdies to share the first round lead with Cochrane.

Sanders, Brent Paterson (Christchurch) and Elliot Boult (Otago) were the only other players to better par, all finishing on 71. Cochrane retained the lead at the half-way stage after Minifie (77), Kupa (78), Boult (76) and Paterson (79) all crashed in the afternoon. However, the situation

changed dramatically in the third round when the likeable Tairei player, Stephen Morshuis, returned a six-under-par 66 — the best score of the tournament. He carded eight birdies during his round and had he not missed short putts on the eleventh and fourteenth greens he would have threatened the course record of 65. Scores:— 287 — J. B. Sanders (Christchurch) 71, 73, 73, 70. 291 — T. Cochrane (Waitemata) 69, 73, 70, 79. 292 — J. Kupa (Napier) 69, 78, 73, 72; A. Rose (St Clair) 72, 75, 71, 74; E. Boult (Otago) 71, 76, 71, 74. 294 — G. Radka (Otatara) 73, 76, 70, 75; S. Morshuis (Taieri) 74, 75, 66, 79. 296 — J. Lapsley (Rangiora) 73, 77, 73, 73; K. McDonald (St Clair) 75, 78, 73, 70. 297 — P. Minifie (Christchurch) 69, 77, 72, 79. 298 — C. Alexander (Ashburton) 73, 79, 73, 73; R. C. Murray (Timaru) 72, 74, 74, 78.
