Top Blend should measure up today
From ALEX McMILLAN Westport Top Blend, a brilliant winner over 1600 m in a lower grade on Saturday, appears capable of coping with the sharp rise in class he will encounter in the Westport Businessmen’s Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting at Patterson Park today. A five-year-old entire by Pass The Bottle, Top Blend was untroubled to justify his firm favouritism on Saturday, overcoming the inconvenience of being caught four wide in the early stages with the minimum of effort and putting a winning break on his rivals on the home turn. His rider, Jackie Oakeshott, did not appear to ask him for any serious effort until very close to home, and the fact that Top Blend was able to post Imin 37.3 s for the 1600 m (0.3 s outside Ribot Vain’s track record), speaks volumes for his ability. Top Blend is prepared at Rangiora by Graeme Hoare, who races the bay in partnership with Mrs Ngaire Langford, and it is believed that he will be even better suited by today’s longer distance of 2000 m.
A talented field of open class handicappers will ensure that Top Blend is severely tested today, and Julie’s Boy and Steel King, the principals in the finish of the corresponding event on Saturday, will almost certainly be the pair to dispute the favouritism.
Le Valet looked close to worth-while, form on Saturday and could provide the upset, while Frontline, Gaelic Bid and Machiavelli must always be accorded the utmost respect. The benefit of a 4.5 kg allowance and a lightning fast track should enable the brilliant Sea Princess to place Peligro’s 1200 m track record of Imin 10.8 s under threat today in the second leg of . the double, the
Tavern Visitors Syndicate Challenge Cup Handicap. The apprentice, Rangi Taylor, takes the mount on the speedster today and with her carded weight of 57kg reduced to 52.5 kg Sea Princess will be expected to start a short-priced favourite.
The daughter of Beaufort Sea and Misadvice fought tenaciously under her top weight of 57kg on Saturday, finishing a close third to Beach Bird. The run was her first totalisator start since the spring, when a wind operation was performed on the mare. With just minimal improvement on Saturday’s run the chestnut appeals as an outstanding prospect today. Alarming, Charlie’s Pal, and, if he starts, Beach Bird, seem the most likely obstacles to the favourite.
