Sponsors for deaf sought

The Christchurch steering committee for Deaf Awareness Week is looking for sponsors to help bring the Deaf Sign Singers to Christchurch for the first time. The committee hoped the “singers” would be the highlight of the week, but the co-ordinator. Mrs Jo Hussey, said that about $5OO was needed to fly the three deaf “singers" and one prompter from Auckland.

Deaf Awareness Week will run from April 8 to April 14, but the "singers” would only be in Christchurch on April 10 and 11 as they are also to sing in Wellington and Dunedin. Steering committees in these centres are also trying to raise money for their air fares.

If the money can be raised, Mrs Hussey said they would probably give performances at the Farmers Trading Company store, the Triangle Centre, and Merivale Mall. Other activities planned for the week include workshops, total communication displays, and hearing tests.
