United will not sign Wilson
Christchurch United will not have Richard Wilson as its goal-keeper for the 1984 Rothmans Soccer league competition.
Laurie Blyth, United’s coach, discussed the former New Zealand goal-keeper’s position with the president of Wilson’s Australian club, Preston, yesterday and has decided not to pursue the matter.
Preston has placed a $NZ25,000 transfer fee on Wilson and United has refused to pay such a sum. Mr Blyth said there was no chance of the club spending that sort of money on a player. John Branov, Preston’s president, told Mr Blyth that he had some sympathy for Wilson, but he had heavy financial considerations to bear in mind. He added that within a few weeks of the Australian season starting, he would be able to sell Wilson to another Phillips League club for the asking price. Mr Blyth will now decide between two goal-keepers in Britain, both of whom are available to come to New Zealand this winter. One of them, aged 22, has been the reserve team goal-keeper for the top English club, West Ham United, while the other, two years older, has played for Orient, Watford and Blackpool, and has been an English youth international.
In addition, Mr Blyth is considering the various merits of three English strikers. One is with Newcastle United, striving for promotion to the first division, another is with Crystal Palace, while the third has been with Colchester United, and has played in Denmark and Finland. The final decision will be based on the financial aspects of the deal, but should be wrapped up in the next few days.
