Highland band contest held

The Invercargill Caledonian Pipe Band easily won the recent Canterbury provincial Highland pipe band championship at Darfield.

The Invercargill band won all sections of the grade one competition — the street march, the selection, the quickstep, and the drum major’s display. It was 21 points ahead of the Canterbury Caledonian Society band and the Scottish Society band. In grade two competitions the Metropolitan band won the street march, selection, and quickstep for first place over all, and was second in the drum major’s display.

The Caledonian Ladies’ band was second in grade two, winning the display section, and second in the

street march and quickstep. Temuka, second in the selection, was third over all and Ashburton fourth. Eight bands competed in the second grade competitions. Graham Price, of the Scottish Society, won the staff-flourishing event. Linda McLean, of Caledonian Ladies’, was champion drum major. The competition was a lead-up to the New Zealand pipe band championships in Auckland on March 2 to 4. Grade three was won by St Andrew’s College, with Methven second, and North Otago third.

In the fourth grade, Metropolitan Ladies’ band was first, Timaru Ladies’ second, and City of Christchurch third.
