Powerful Saab
BEHIND the WHEEL with
Peter Greenslacte
Saab, the Swedish carmaker, will soon unveil its most powerful model to date, the Turbo 16 Aero.
It is powered by Saab’s 16-valve third generation turbocharged engine which develops 129 kW (175bhp) at 5300 rpm. This engine features a completely new cylinder head with twin overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a 9 to 1 compression ratio. To reduce servicing requirements, hydraulic valve lifters are fitted, eliminating the need for valve adjustments.
A Garrett Aißesearch T 3 turbocharger provides the boost and a patented Saab device enables fuels of vari-
ous octane ratings to be used. Fuel injection originates in a microprocessorcontrolled Bosch LH system.
This car comes as a twodoor hatchback, the interior being upholstered and trimmed either in luxury velour or genuine leather.
Other features include electrically operated sunroof, front windows and exterior mirror, central locking and delayed courtesy lights.
The car is claimed to accelerate from rest to 96km/h in 8.2 s and to have a maximum speed of 212 km/ h. Fuel consumption in an urban situation is around 12.55 litres per 100 kilometres.
