Welsh match Rives’s finale

NZPA-Reuter London France’s Jean-Pierre Rives is probably the most glamorous figure in rugby, a compliment he shrugs off with disdain. To rugby fans though it is not his looks but the speed and anticipation of his play at flanker and the way he has brought discipline to the often brilliant but sometimes wayward play of the French side which makes Rives one of the greatest players of all time. Rives is unlikely to play international rugby after this season and tomorrow morning’s (New Zealand time) Five Nations championship match against Wales will probably be the last time the French captain runs out on to Cardiff Arms Park.

A victory for France would be another giant step towards the championship they shared with Ireland last year and provide a triumphant farewell for Rives.
