Profit looms on tour

The England cricket tour of New Zealand may not have brought much joy so far to the tourists, but they have been a major attraction. The New Zealand Cricket Council is at present ahead of the income needed to square the account books. The chairman of the board of control, Mr R. A. Vance, has said that gate takings for the tour had to total $790,000 if the council was to cover all its costs. A guaranteed sum had to be paid to the English authorities, and from this, the touring team met all travelling expenses, accommodation, and players’ fees. “They pay everything,” said Mr Vance.

He provided a breakdown of the tour receipts so far as under:

The budgeted receipts for the seven matches played so far total $330,000; the gate takings amount to $386,630. Mr Vance said the budgets for the one-day matches were: $170,000 at Christchurch, $90,000 at Wellington, $200,000 at Auckland.
