Big Canty presence at N.Z. swim titles

Fifty-three Canterbury swimmers will battle with the best in New Zealand at the national age-group championships in Rotorua this week-end.

Canterbury lacks the strength in age-group competitors it has had in previous years, but the team should return with a healthy share of medals.

In 17 events Canterbury swimmers have qualified as the fastest finalists. If Tracy Black (New Brighton) can maintain the times she produced in qualifying first in five events, and second in two, she will not only be the outstanding swimmer in the Canterbury team, but possibly the best performer at the championships. Her twin sister, Rachelle, will be close by in several events. She is the third qualifier in four events. The sisters are 14.

Anthony Beks (New Brighton), the holder of the New Zealand junior 100 m breaststroke record is likely to dominate the

breaststroke events in the boys 16 years age-group, just as his club-mate, Anthea Forbes, should dominate the same events in the girls 17 years section. Lisa Chamberlain (New Brighton) has qualified second in five events in the girls 17 years age-group, but she is such a tenacious, and improving, competitor, that it would not be a surprise if she turned a couple of those rankings into firsts. Linda Robinson (Wharenui) is top qualifier in three events in the girls 12 years and under section and others who have top ranking in one event are Deborah Small (Wharenui), Kirsten Mclntosh (Wharenui), Jane Bishop (New Brighton) and Duncan Doig (Wharenui). The Canterbury team is: Boys 17 years: D. Doig (Wharenui). 16 years: A. Beks, D. Baars (New Brighton); I. MacDonald (Wharenui). 15 years: R. Os-

borne, S. Faoagali (Wharenui); P. Bethall (New Brighton); H. Osborne (Avon). 14 years: M. Ford, M. Bouwmeester (Wharenui); T. Mason (Westport). 13 years: L. Penrose, R. Smith, A. Bell (Wharenui). 12 years and under: D. Hibbs, H Woolley, M. Davenport, J. Wheeler (New Brighton); C. Watson, C. Harris, S. Ellison, M. Faoagali, L. McDonald, P. Brady (Wharenui). Girls 17 years: L. Chamberlain, A. Forbes (New Brighton). 16 years: J. Bishop (New Brighton); S. Pemberton, S. Timms (Avon); K. Faoagali (Wharenui). 15 years: K. Mclntosh, T. Rahurahu (Wharenui). 14 years: T. Black, R. Black, C. Beks, D. Haycock (New Brighton); D. Small, F. Pollitt (Wharenui); M. Timms (Avon). 13 years: A. Faoagali, J. Corbett, C. Parris (Wharenui); N. Lutton (Avon); J. Crothall (North Beach); C. Wormaid (New Brighton). 12 years and under: K. Stokes, S. Jeffries, J. Stokes, M. Robinson (New Brighton); M. van Soest, L. Robinson, T. Ford (Wharenui); A. Meekan (Avon).
