Space programme
Sir,—lt angers me to see the real problems of the world go unresolved and unattended while the world wonders at the space walk. The space programme seems only a giant money-spinner for giant corporations to reinforce the ideology of its sponsors. I cannot accept the argument that spin-offs benefit mankind because they are usually self-fulfilling and not direct and immediate enough to morally justify the capital investment. The world is still fighting and suffering. I am equally critical of the Soviet Union, but I am more concerned with the United States because I am in the Western bloc, an alliance claiming a mortgage on morality. One cannot be comfortable professing loyalty to Western principles while perceiving gross hypocrisy in Western attitudes, and consequently scepticism and cynicism result. Governments cannot expect loyalty when credibility is low. — Yours, etc., lAN BAKER. February 10, 1984.
