Sponsorship of sport
Sir, — You have reported that the anti-smoking group (A.S.H.) has called for a commission to investigate the sponsorship of sport by tobacco companies. Before the creation of the taxpayer-funded Council for Recreation and Sport,
one tobacco company employed full-time coaches in many sports from 1966 onwards. These included cricket, rowing, hockey, soccer, softball and lawn bowls. Their record of international successes speaks for itself. Other forms of sponsorship have been provided only in reaction to requests, but never to sports pastimes involving children. After contact with many thousands of sportsmen and women over many years involvement, I am unaware of anyone who has commenced smoking through sponsorship. However, I do know some who have changed brands and favoured the sponsor. Our fair country has a minority of wowsers and nutters. They must not dictate to the largely silent majority. — Yours, etc.,
C. W. BROMLEY. February 15, 1984.
