Stead surprises

By W. R. CARSTON Stead, a former member of “Ned” Thistoll’s Riccarton stable, brought off one of the major surprises of the Riccarton Turf Club’s annual on-course meeting at Riccarton yesterday when he clearly outstayed Flying Milley and nine others in the Godavari “1600.”

The seven-year-old Diplomatic Agent gelding, which was formerly raced by Fred Blogg, of Christchurch, is now prepared at Hokitika for a four-member West Coast syndicate by Johnny Hurfen.

Stead, which has never really been regarded as a 1600 m horse, yesterday made short work of his rivals at that distance and returned his win supporters odds better than 32-1.

The Tuahiwi apprentice, Hunter Thomas, had Stead handily positioned to the home turn, found racing room for him on the inside after passing the false rail, and he pegged back the pace-maker, Flying Milley, in the last 100 m and beat him home by three parts of a length. Top Blend ran another respectable race for third and he was followed in by Black Gull and Rebel Star.

Mhorso came up with his second win in the colours of his North Canterbury owners, Bob and Shirley Gorton, when he won the Sir Bart “2000” in style from Battle Play and Our Speed. Mhorso, which is prepared at Riccarton by “Bud” Biddulph, was the rail-ender of 11 running in to the last 800 m. Gary Blair brought him forward in the chase after the leaders 300 m out and he won going away by more than two lengths. Battle Play, which had a good run close to the pace all the way, outstayed Our Speed for second by half a length and Indian Idol was only a nose away in fourth in a blanket finish for the minors.
