Weight unlikely to stop Clansman tomorrow
Special correspondent
Clansman could prove a worthy top weight in the $20,000 White Robe Lodge Handicap at the Otago Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow.
Clansman brillantly won the Hazlett Stakes over tomorrow’s distance, 1600 m, at Wingatui in December. He has since added the Timaru Cup (16000 m a weight-for-age 2000 race at Riccarton, and a third placing behind Shifnal Prince and Clear Gold in the Anniversary Handicap (1600) at Trentham.
He carried 53.5 kg in the Hazlett and has 57 tomorrow but the four-year-old chestnut entire has the physique to carry weight. Clansman’s Riccarton three-year-old stablemate, Gaffa, could provide him with formidable opposition when the pair clash for the first time. Gaffa has 52.5 kg, half a kilogram less than scale weight against Clansman, which is rated at weight-for-age. The New Zealand two thousand guineas winner at Riccarton in November, Gaffa has carried on to win the Southland Guineas and a weight-for-age 2000 m race at Riccarton and finish fourth in the Wellington Stakes won by Abit Leica. Few three-year-olds have contested the White Robe and there is yet to be a winner from that age group.
Dig In could make his presence felt. Winner of the White Robe-Hazlett Stakes double last season, he looked back to his best when winning over 1200 m at Invercargill on Monday. He is well placed with 54kg, 2.5 kg less than weight-for-age. Queen’s Pal, which finished third, five lengths from Clansman in the Hazlett, meets him on 4.5 kg better terms tomorrow, a situation that should give her ample opportunity. The Dimple finished third to Dig In and Super Dude in the race last year under a similar weight. She won by eight lengths over 1600 m in the Aluminium Stakes at the Southland meeting last month after finishing a distant fourth in the Timaru Cup.
