Shipping news Coal stockpile will be tidied

The 20,781-ton vessel Cairnsmore arrived at Lyttelton last evening to begin loading 34,000 tonnes of coal for Japan. The Cairnsmore comes soon after the Elbe, which loaded 3150 tonnes of coal last Sunday for Korea.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s traffic manager, Mr David Jones, said that the stockpile was moderately low, with 46,625 tonnes stored. The port had been receiving about 100 railway waggons of coal daily from the West Coast in preparation for the Cairnsmore visit.

After the Cairnsmore has completed loading on Sunday evening, the stockpile will be tidied and rearranged, Mr Jones said.

The stockpile’s lay-out will be changed to improve loading and unloading and to allow a better selection of the different grades of coal stored. Six grades of coal are stored at the site at present. The new coal ship, the Sea Grace, is due in port on March

3 to load 20,000 tonnes for Japan. The Sea Grace will be the last ship to load coal during the present financial year. The Sapporo Maru, which was expected to arrive at Timaru on Monday, has been diverted to Dunedin. ARRIVALS
