14 young people for Year of Youth body

Young people will take the main role in organising activities for the International Year of Youth. 1985.

Fourteen young people, aged between 15 and 25, will be appointed to a co-ordi-nating group for the I.Y.Y. at a public meeting in Christchurch on February 22.

They will represent a wide cross-section of youth groups in Christchurch and be responsible for running I.Y.Y. activities at a local level.

Next week’s meeting is the follow-up to a pilot meeting held in September last year to discuss regional organisation for the I.Y.Y. Chaired by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, the meeting will feature the appointment of

the group, the ratification of a constitution and the official launching of the I.Y.Y. symbol. The 1.Y.Y., coined by the United Nations, is seen as an ideal opportunity to focus attention on young people, the issues affecting them, and their role, function, and potential in the community. Although the I.Y.Y. programme will be largely formulated by the young coordinating group, semi-pro-

fessional advice and resources will be available from a second group made up of older members of the community. The national liaison officer for 1.Y.Y., Ms Rona Ensor, and the executive officer of the National Youth Council, Mr Malcolm Menzies, will attend the meeting. The meeting, to be held at Lady Wigram Hall, 33 Cashel Street, on February 22 at 7.30 p.m. is open to all.
