Colts softball title

PA Invercargill The Wellington pitcher, Marty Hamilton, was the dominating influence in his team’s successful third consecutive defence of the national colts softball title when it beat Hutt Valley, 2-0, in the final at Surrey Park, Invercargill, last evening.

Wellington went to Invercargill as the favourite and throughout the tournament there was little doubt it would .take a place in the final. Hamilton’s pitching, and batting on the last day, backed up the all-round effort of the team during the week, and helped Wellington to its fourteenth national colts title since the tournament started in 1961.

In the semi-finals. Wellington beat Auckland, 2-1, and Hutt Valley beat Otago. 4-0. Final placings play-off (in order): Auckland 7, Otago O, Canterbury 12, North Shore 2; Southland 8, Counties 0; Bay of Plenty 1, Eastern Southland 0; Wanganui 9, South Canterbury 2; Mid-Canterbury 7, South Otago |. A New Zealand Colts team

and a Rest team were an nounced after the final.

The New Zealand team is: M. Hamilton (Wellington), G. Davis (Hutt Valley) pitchers; M. Sorensen (Hutt Valley), G. Wilson (Wellington) catchers; T. Kairuna (Wellington) first base; E. Kohlasse (Auckland) second base; N. Wilson (Otago) third base; A. Hamilton (Wellington) short stop; B. Dalton (Hutt Valley) left field; N. Morrison (Hutt Valley) centre field; S. Workman (Wellington) right field; C. Krejcisz (Wellington) utility-, M. Laws (Wellington) designated hitter. The Rest: G. Newton (Southland). E. Wilson (Wanganui) pitchers; M. Hamilton (North Shore), T. Simpson (Auckland) catchers; P. Shannon (Canterbury) first base; D. Clifton (Hutt Valley) second base; P. Cassey (Auckland) third base; D.
