Mother found guilty
PA Palmerston North
A woman, aged 20, has been found guilty in the High Court at Palmerston North of the attempted murder of her daughter, aged five months. Lorraine Carol O’Callaghan was remanded by Mr Justice Quilliam until today for sentence. The jury recommended mercy.
The Court was told that O’Callaghan wrapped plastic round her daughter’s head. The child bled from the nose and mouth but recovered.
She died 10 days later in a Social Welfare home of a cot death.
His Honour, who told the jury it must decide calmly and dispassionately, said the case was sad and distressing.
