Board’s name change

The name has changed but “North Canterbury Hospital Board” will appear on stationery, vehicles, and signs for some time yet. Legislation passed last December shortened the title to “Canterbury Hospital Board,” a change the Christchurch-based board has been wanting for about five years to give a better idea of its coverage.

The board’s chief executive, Mr Ron Parker, said the new name would be introduced gradually at no extra cost. It would appear on stationery as new supplies were ordered and on vehicles as they were replaced or the stick-on letters wore off.

“Some signs might be here for up to another five years,” he said. Fortunately, the board logo, an H with one side of the cross-bar extended, had been designed and so it was still appropriate. Changing the title had been a long process since

board members first decided that the words “North Canterbury” were a misnomer for an area extending from Kaikoura to the Rakaia River.

“A lot of people thought we were based to the north of Christchurch somewhere,” Mr Parker said. The board was notified of its new title earlier this month.
