Beer and peanuts?
PA Auckland For a few minutes yesterday afternoon the regulars of the Schooner Tavern on Auckland’s waterfront had a former United States President, Mr Jimmy Carter, and his wife, Rosalynn, as drinking partners.
Mr and Mrs Carter had emerged with purchases from a sheepskin shop next door when a cry went up from tavern drinkers on the pavement.
Would the Carters join them for a drink? To the alarm of his security men, Mr Carter agreed. A watersider, Mr Peter Santo, said he made the invitation, although he was reluctant at first to give his name.
“No names,” he said. “My wife doesn’t know I’m here.”
Inside the crowded lounge bar Mr and Mrs Carter were handed two beers. The couple, encircled by security men, chatted to several patrons.
“That’s good beer,” said Mr Carter. The Carters were made to feel more than welcome. “If he comes in here and drinks with the boys, he’s tops,” said one customer.
Mr Carter made the rounds of the bar and had a kiss for its oldest regular, Gladys Fagan, aged 82. Asked before leaving Auckland last evening if he had enjoyed his visit, Mr Carter said: “I had a chance before, during and after my term in the White House, to tour many countries, but I have never found a place more beautiful or the people so friendly."
Mr and Mrs Carter left Auckland Airport at 9.45 p.m. for Honolulu and Los Angeles.
