Minister favours voluntary liquor advt restraints
PA Auckland The Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, strongly opposes moves to ban liquor advertising.
“I do not believe compulsory statutory bans on advertising are in any way desirable,” he told the wine industry at the Wine Institute dinner for the legislature in Auckland on Wednesday evening. “Experience with the tobacco industry has shown it is possible to obtain broad agreement on voluntary restraint,” he said. “If, in fact, a similar type of restraint was considered necessary in respect of alcohol, I see no reason why it cannot be achieved voluntarily by the industry itself. “I would be particularly concerned if there was a total ban on liquor advertising. It would irretrievably
damage the wine industry. “As a strong supporter of the industry I have no wish to see that happen.” Mr McLay told the wine industry that the public probably did not make any real distinction between wine and other forms of alcoholic beverages. “Certainly those who seek to limit, control, or even ban the sale or advertising of alcohol do not make any distinction.
“One has to look very hard at wine advertisements to find wine being commercially promoted as a drink of moderation and principally in association with food.
“If such a style were adopted it would go some way towards combating the recent moves to ban all forms of liquor advertising,” he said.
