The chief electrician of the United States Antarctic supply ship Southern Cross, Mr Paul Wright (kneeling), checks the source of the fire which broke out in the vessel on Tuesday. Helping
him are the ship's chief engineer, Mr Earl Caulkins, and the second assistant engineer, Mr Tom Wegman (rear). Fire Service units from the Lyttelton, Woolston, and
Christchurch Central Stations were called out but the fire, which was in a switchboard in the engine room, was out when they arrived. Little damage was caused.
