First bulk gas arrives
PA Dunedin The first bulk supply of liquid petroleum gas to reach the South Island arrived on board the L.P.G. carrier Coral Gas at Dunedin yesterday. The 1200 tonnes of gas was unloaded yesterday afternoon by executive staff into a new onshore installation, the first set up by Liquigas in the South Island. Another installation, being built in Christchurch, is expected to be ready about August. “We set a target in 1981 to have bulk delivery to the South Island by February 10, 1984, so we have not done too badly at all,” said the general manager of Li-
quigas, Mr F. J. Easther. An industrial dispute over which trade union would load and unload the tanker delayed her sailing from New Plymouth last week. Liquigas was eventually granted a High Court injunction which allowed the ship to sail. Executive staff at the Dunedin terminal unloaded the Coral Gas yesterday. Sir George Chapman, chairman of Liquigas, welcoming the arrival of the ship at Dunedin, said. “The commissioning process marks the culmination of three years planning by Liquigas to bring the benefits of bulk L.P.G. to South Island consumers.”
