Programme’s new base
Parents, supervisors, and pupils of the Hoon Hay Te Kohanga Reo (“language nest”), programme (pictured) gather outside their new classroom, at Rowley Primary School, yesterday.
The group, which calls itself Te Whanau Tahi (one
family), has been meeting at the Boon Hay Community Centre since it was established in February last year. The treasurer, Mrs Mihi Winiata, said yesterday that the group was given approval by the school and the Canterbury Education
Board to use the classroom and saw this as an encouraging step towards the Kohanga Reo programme being extended into schools. The programme, a Maori language scheme for preschoolers, is one of five in Christchurch and the first to be based at a school.
Althought the programme will be independent of the school’s curriculum Mrs Winiata was confident that having the venue would be beneficial for the group and the school. Already there were plans for help from a remedial teacher, said Mrs Winiata.
