Voluntary unionism

Sir,—ln a news item headed “Clash on unionism forecast soon” (February 14), Mr Jim Butterworth, secretary of the Auckland Engineers’ Union, gives the impression of going out to meet trouble. Since voluntary unionism became law on February 1, resignations had ranged from none to 1 per cent, he says. One wonders by what stretch of the imagination he sees one in 100 a problem. Mr Gavin Bell, secretary of the Auckland Printers’ Union, with no more than one in 500 resigning, says that members will hot associate with non-mem-bers even to the extent of not eating lunch with them. He caps this by saying you cannot force people to associate with others. If that is so, there is still some hope for voluntary unionism. — Yours, etc W. ANDERSON, Geraldine. February 14, 1984.
