Renewal of ties
PA Wellington New Zealand and the Soviet Union are expected to resume full diplomatic relations next week. Diplomatic sources said last evening that an announcement was expected from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, on Monday.
Earlier this week Mr Cooper told NZPA that discussions were still under way between officials.
The Soviet Union has not had an ambassador in Well-
ington since the former Ambassador, Mr Vsevolod Sofinsky, was expelled in 1980. Its senior representative here now is a charge d’affairs, Mr Vladimir Azarushkin.
New Zealand is represented in Moscow by a charge d’affairs, Mr Frank Wilson.
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, said he expected an announcement to be made “before too long” on New Zealand’s relations with the Soviet Union.
