New course for home decorators
Public interest in an interior decorating course at the Building Centre has been such that the 70 places available have already been nearly filled. The course of six evening lectures and demonstrations starts on Wednesday, February 22 and continues on consecutive Wednesdays until March 28.
Organised by the Building Centre in conjunction with the W.E.A., the course is being co-ordinated by
Miriam Roberts, a graduate of the Christchurch Polytechnic interior design course, who is a part-time Polytech tutor as well as having her own interior design business.
The lectures are aimed at home improvers who might have had little experience in renovating; one theme is followed each evening, with theory backed up by practical demonstrations by some of the Building Centre exhibitors.
The course brings together experts in a number of practical fields and at its conclusion participants should have a working knowledge of how to tackle interior renovations and where to go for information and assistance with specific tasks.
The first lecture deals with the creation of space, both visually and physically and the course progresses through flooring options for individual rooms, the use of
colour, alternatives in wall coverings, window treatments and lighting. As a follow-up to the basic course, a further six lectures have been planned for the discussion of individual rooms. Taking one room a night, the secondary course will deal with the character, requirements, furnishings and accessories of that room.
For those people who miss the first course, however, another has been promised later in the year and this is expected to follow a similar pattern.
