59 complaints on freeze
PA Wellington Fifty-nine complaints alleging breaches of the price freeze were received by the Trade and Industry Department in the week to February 1. The chief categories were groceries (18) and restau-rant-takeaways (7), said the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton. During that period, the department completed investigation of 45 complaints. In 38 cases, the prices charged were found to be in order.
In the week, the department received 16 applications for price rises under the hardship provisions of the freeze. Fifteen were approved, none declined, and 13 withdrawn.
The 15 applications approved included.— Brooklyn Bakeries, Ltd (Christchurch), an increase of 4c a unit for bread and smallgoods products. Gordons Valley Lime Com-
pany, Ltd (Waimate), an increase of 2.25 per cent in lime products. Maungati Lime Company, Ltd, an increase ranging from 10.6 per cent to 16.3 per cent for agricultural lime products. St Martins Fish Supply, an increase of 10c on fried food lines.
Stacey and Hawker, Ltd (Christchurch), an increasee of 6c a unit for bread and smallgoods products. The Home Organisers (Christchurch), an increase from $lO to $2O on membership fees to its employment agency. Waihi School Trust Board, Timaru, an increase of 4.5 per cent in school fees. Dispensations under Regulation 118, permitting increased prices on account of increased costs of leather:— Bayley Tomkins Hedges, Ltd (Dunedin), by 12.36 per cent; E. Astley and Sons, Ltd (Auckland), 11.38 per cent; Glendermid Leathers, Ltd, a weighted average increase of 13.86 per cent; Tasman Tanning Company, Ltd (Wanganui), 15 per cent; W. Sutherland and Company, Ltd (Auckland), 20.55 per cent. .
