Javelin thrower aims high

The rising star of javelin throwing in New Zealand, John Stapylton-Smith, of Christchurch, will rest from competition this week-end before attempting to break the 80m barrier in the Canterbury championship on February 11. Stapylton-Smith, who started the season throwing around 70m, last Saturday shattered his Canterbury record with a mighty effort of 79m in the international meeting at Auckland. This puts him in second place behind Mike O’Rourke (Auckland) on the alltime New Zealand ranking list. His target this season was to better 80m, but this is now a stepping stone to greater things. The qualifying distance for the Los Angeles Olympics is 85m, and this has become his main object.

“He knows he can do 80m now, so he has lifted his aim to 85m,” his coach, Mr Mene Mene, said last evening. “Looking at the progress he has made this season, 85m is within his capabilities this season. There is still a lot of room for improvement.”
