More Govt M.P.S to retire?
PA Wellington The National Party’s president, Mrs Sue Wood, expects more Government members of Parliament to announce their retirement in the next three months. “I expect there to be more retirements but I won’t be drawn into commenting on individuals — that is a matter for the people concerned and their electorates,” she said yesterday. Two Cabinet Ministers at the centre of speculation over whether there will be further retirements are the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Maclntyre, and the Minister of Defence, Mr Thomson,
both aged 68. Mrs Wood was asked, in light of her call last year for a rejuvenation of the party, about the statement by the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, that there would be no reshuffle of the Cabinet before the General Election. Sir Robert had said he would have a big reshuffle after the election when he knew who had retired and who whs available for the Cabinet. Mrs Wood noted that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Highet, and the National member for Kaipara, Mr P. I, Wilkinson, had already announced their retirement.
