Swiss four entered

The first competitive appearance in New Zealand of the visiting Swiss four will be one of the highlights of the 1984 South Island rowing championships to be held at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel, this week-end with a record entry of 431 crews. All four Swiss oarsmen, Daniel Hornberger (stroke), Franz Wyss, Peter Rahn, and Phillip Moriteil, come from the Zurich Boating Club, but will race for Wairau (Blenheim), at Lake Ruataniwha. The Swiss will race in both the coxed and coxless fours events where their main opposition will come from the two strong Avon premier combinations. After its amazing time of smin 17.28 s on the short course at Kerrs' Reach (1830 m in the pennant

eights last week-end the Avon eight will also be eager to see how fast it can go on a full-length course of 2000 m. It will also be interesting to see how the Union women’s singles sculler, Nicky Osten, formerly of Star (Wellington), performs this time. She is the only woman club rower in Christchurch outside the Canterbury Rowing Club. The two-day regatta will be the largest held in the South Island, outside a national championship, and it will act as a final trial for the 1985 nationals which will be held at Lake Ruataniwha for the first time. Because of the huge number of entries the programme for each day will be a long one, from 11 a.m.

to 6.30 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 5.15 p.m. on Sunday. Crews have been told that Monday will be the “spare day” if the regatta is affected by wind. The most popular of the 38 events is the intermediate fours with 33 crews while the open quadruple scull will have just two crews. Lower-class events have the heaviest entries in the novice pairs (27), intermediate pairs (27), junior fours (22), and novice fours (21). All the finishes will be recorded on video and, for the first time in New Zealand, the regatta will be run with the assistance of a computer. The computer will be used for such things as the collation of entries and the recording of scratchings.
