Barnes, Willcox bounce back
PA Auckland The defending world champions, David Barnes and Hamish Willcox, won the third race of the world 470 yachting championships yesterday to bounce back into contention for the title.
The pair, bidding to become only the second combination to win the event three times, are now in sixth place over all and within range of the leaders. At the top of a closely packed leading bunch is another well-performed New Zealand team. Murray Jones and Earl Berry. Their third placing yesterday, after a win in the second race, put them six points clear of the field. For Barnes and Willcox the win was a welcome return to their stylish form of recent world championships. Apart from the first leg, they led all the way and at one stage had stretched their lead to Imin 30s over the Dutchmen, Stavenuiter and Alkenade. The Dutchmen chased hard and had cut the lead to 17 seconds at the finish. Results.—
