Rain becomes ally

PA Auckland Rain, which at one time threatened to wash Auckland out of the Shell Cup cricket final, eventually became an ally as it scampered to victory over Northern Districts at Eden Park yesterday. The start was delayed for an hour, reducing the game from 50 to 43 overs a side. Northern was swept aside by keen bowling and razorsharp fielding for only 136 in 41.1 overs. Auckland thus needed only a shade over three runs an over to march comfortably into the final against Wellington at the Basin Reserve on March 10. A drizzle became an downpour and Aucklanders lamented that the match would be drawn, Auckland would gain only a point and Central Districts would slip into the final. The skies cleared and the rain stopped, however, and it was calculated that 23 overs could be bowled.

Northern Districts had scored just over three runs an over in its innings, Aucklkand, therefore, needed 73 runs to win in 23 overs. John Parker, the Northern Districts captain, set his fields cannily, but Peter Webb soon cracked four fours. John Reid turned the chase into a stroll with 11 from a Brendan Bracewell over, and Jeff Crowe finished the match with three fours and a six. NORTHERN DISTRICTS J. G. Wright c Bracewell b Stott 17 L.
