Big turtle at Kawhia

PA Hamilton A big turtle has been found floating on the incoming tide at Kawhia. Local residents say the dead animal, which measures about 1.5 metres long and 90cm to 1.2 m across, is thought to be a leatherback turtle. It was found drifting just off Te Maika wharf by two young girls, Debbie and Julie Rewi, late last week.

Their mother, Marcia Rewi, said the girls first thought they had seen a body in a wet suit when they glimpsed the glare of the white exposed bones of the turtle’s face in the water. “They were terrified but they kept rowing and as they got closer they realised what it was and came back to get their father,” she said.
