N.Z. shooters finish second
New Zealand finished second behind Great Britain in an international teams’ fullbore rifle shooting contest at the Anzac range, Sydney, at the week-end. The match was shot over 300 m, 600 m and 800 m. Final scores: — Great Britain, 1462.107, 1; New Zealand, 1456.115, 2; New South Wales, 1454.98, 3: Canada, 1408.78, 4. The New Zealand team was B. mires, R. Owens, P. Newman, J. Dodson, E. Fugilstaller, M. Callaghan, J. McLaren and F. Godfrey. The coaches were B. Price and M. Kemick. New Zealand lost the match when two shots were fired on the wrong target, one at 300 m and another at 800 m. Those errors cost nine points. The New Zealand marksmen hit back, and the last nine shooters averaged 49.4 out of a possible 50 over 800 m. Reg
Owens typified the fight-back with 49.3 at 800 m for an aggregate of 149.11 which proved the top score for the international match. The New Zealand under-25 team was narrowly beaten by its New South Wales counterpart (727.53 to 714.45). The New Zealand scores were; M. Miller 147.12; I. Buick 145.14; P. Whiteman 143.3; S. Regan 140.7; S. Hooper 139.9. The coach was Ron Bowie.
