Book chain moving into Australia

The retail chain that has pepped up book selling in New Zealand, London Bookshops, Ltd, is moving into Australia. The firm, founded in Christchurch in 1934 as a lending library by Mr Karo Emanuel, has pioneered book discounting in New Zealand. The firm’s 15 retail outlets in the four main centres and Oamaru now sell about 20 per cent of the country’s books. Its Christchurch shop is in Shades Arcade. Basically London Bookshops has applied the supermarket concept to books, a buyer going to Britain and Europe every three months to obtain remaindered (dis-

continued) books and other discount lots from publishers. These are sold with close attention paid to such factors as lighting, the stacking deeply of stock on tables to give the supermarket impression, discounted prices, and strong advertising. The firm, now London Bookshops, Ltd, family owned, and with its head office in Wellington, will’ open its first overseas shop in the Brandon Park shopping complex, Melbourne, on April 3. A spokesman for the firm said yesterday that it hoped to open further stores in Australia and more shops in New Zealand during the next two years.
