Christian Science Church

Sir,—B. J. Randall (“The Press,” January 25) supports the proposed changes to the Christian Science Church in Worcester Street on the ground that the present facade is “merely a copy of an American design.” Surely the “modern buildings with clean crisp form” B. J. Randall wants to see built are also merely copies of American and European designs. It would be very difficult to point to any building in Christchurch not influenced in some way by previous architectural styles. Are we to infer B. J. Randall prefers a Chinese copy of a pagoda to an American copy of a Greek temple? At least the latter, as it stands, has architectural integrity.— Yours, etc., _ ROBYN STEWART. Jiffiuary 26, 1984.
