Survey notes stolen

A theft may mean that thousands of dollars worth of Government survey work has been wasted. Important survey notes for legalising the land transfer of Twizel canals carrying water to the Ohau hydro station were taken last evening from the unlocked car of Mr George Wilson, chief surveyor of the Lands and Survey Department in Christchurch. Two O.H.M.S. envelopes containing the notes were inside a leather satchel stolen from his car in a Christchurch parking building between 8 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.

Mr Wilson said the thief could return the notes with no questions asked, otherwise it could be several thousand dollars worth of survey work down the drain. “At least we have the survey plans which have the recorded field information on them, but it would be much better to have the originals,” he said. Departmental offices were checking the plans and original field notes for designating the canal land for hydro development before they were returned to Twizel next week.
