Money for uniforms

More than 850 parents have applied to the Social Welfare Department in Christchurch for advance payments of the family benefit to buy school uniforms. The department received 1500 applications last year and, based on this figure, the acting assistant director, Mr Alan McKenzie, expected more applications. The school year will begin on Tuesday.

Parents may apply for advance benefit payments for school uniforms on more than one occasion, but may only use the total of one year’s payment, $312. For example, parents may apply for a $lOO advance when a child begins intermediate school, and the balance of $212 when the child starts high school. If the whole sum of $312 is received at the intermediate level, no further advance payment can be made.
