500 entries for show

More than 500 entries have been received for this year’s Gladiolus and Summer Show at the Horticultural Hall. Good numbers of entries have been received of gladioli, dahlias, roses, pot plants and cut flowers, as well as a big entry of fruit and vegetables. Mr Tom Clark, secretary of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, said floral art was well represented. “The standard of floral art in Christchurch is acknowledged as being the highest in New Zealand,” he said, This year’s show has had

mainly local entries, unlike last year’s which was held nationally. Entries were due to be judged at 10.30 a.m. today in 172 classes. The main trophies being contested are the Canterbury Horticultural Society trophy and the A. H. Sloane memorial cup, as well as the London Town challenge cup, the premier gladioli trophy. Displays of geraniums, pelargoniums, and imported begonias are featured at the show. It is open to the public from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow.
